Students bemoan ‘relocation for renovation’ order

STUDENTS of Kogi State University, Anyigba, especially those still left on campus to complete their exams and final year projects have bemoan the situation they face on the relocation order handed them by management for the purpose of renovation. They made the complains while speaking to our reporter in a chat, saying that the management did not put their plight into consideration before arriving at the decision, and questioned why the renovation did not wait till the end of the session rather than end of the semester. The management has however informed our reporter that the renovation was in the best interest of the students as it would make teaching and learning more conducive for lecturers, the Non-teaching staff and students. The Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities in the institution, Comrade Moses Balogun said the renovation is in the best interest of the students as it would address some of the issues of accommodation situation in the hostels. The students are of the opinion that some of them that are freshers are being exposed to dangers, including the female students being exposed to rape as they have no relatives to stay with in Anyigba, hence being forced to stay with strangers, whose characters they don’t know. On its part, the management said those who would be staying behind to complete their exams and final projects have been relocated to new hostel buildings to pave way for the renovation. “It is because of them (those that would stay behind) that we are relocating them to the new hostel buildings that we know are in standard order.” Comrade said: “I was in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria over the last couple of days for SSANU meeting and I must say that some of the hostels and lecture theatres have gone through renovations, so, why would our own university be an exception? “Renovation is a normal exercise from time to time in all universities around the world and within the country. So, it is not a new thing. The students should be happy about the prospect that they would come back and meet brand new facilities, including hostels and lecture theatres. They should embrace it rather than whine about it.”
