STUDENTS
of Mass Communication Department in Kogi State University, Anyigba, have rolled
out the drums to celebrate this year’s Mass Communication Students Association
(MACOSA) Day for 2014 with pump and pageantry.
The
occasion which was marked between Wednesday, 19th and Friday, 21st November,
2014, was laced with various activities to mark the annually epoch event.
Wednesday
19th saw the entire Faculty of Social Sciences being flooded with variation of
dresses that bring nostalgia about the days of the past. “Old School Day” was
how they referred to that day and students were seen gaily dressed in the
attires reminiscent of the past.
One
of the students proudly decked in the old school attire and 200 Level student
of Mass Communication, Haruna Berikisu, expressed her joy for having been able
to witness the day, hence her determination to enjoy not only the day, but also
the entire MACOSA week to the fullest.
The
elderly-looking Berikisu who said she felt good for having to appear in attire
worn by generations past, stated that she decided to appear in it to mark a day
as important in the life of the department to honour all Mass Communication Students
in the world.
In
his own words, a 100 level student, Victor James, who said he had enjoyed his
first MACOSA Day on campus, expressed joy at being able to witness the day and
partaking in it, but however expressed disappointment at the levity with which
other ‘senior’ students took the event.
“I
don’t know why some of our seniors, I mean some of those in three hundred and
four hundred levels are not celebrating the MACOSA Week with us. I thought they
are still part of the students of the department, hence should mark it with the
rest of us.”
Speaking,
the President of Mass Communication Association, Kogi State University, Comrade
Shedrach Awodi, voiced his satisfaction at the way he has piloted the affairs
of the body since his election at the end of last session, thanked the Head of Department,
Reverend Sister Chika Asogwa for the support she has given him since his
emergence as the department’s students leader.
He
said this year’s MACOSA Day has been designed in a unique manner to ensure that
every Mass Communication student on campus can be proud of his department.
Thursday
20th November marked the day dedicated to the wearing of rags. They referred to
the day as rag day. Several students were seen in ragtag, even though some of
the dresses worn were not rags hitherto, but deliberately torn in honour of the
day.
The
day also saw the students march around various streets and intersections of Anyigba
town to raise awareness about the day. They also used the day to raise some money,
which were donated to them by motorists and other passersby who saw match around
the town.
To
climax the event, a lecturer at the department, Mr. Abaje Austin was invited to
deliver a lecture to mark the occasion. The lecture dwelt on the impact of Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) on the students and how they can use it to
improve their educational capability.
The
lecturer, who warned the students against all ICT-related vices, called on them
to shun anything that would hamper their educational pursuit.
According
to him, the students should use their technological gadgets positively to
improve themselves and academically and develop their entrepreneurial spirit
rather than wasting the gadgets on watching pornography and other things that
would not add to them in any way.
He
said they should ensure that they live a life worthy of emulation by their
younger ones by desisting from anything that would not bring glory to themselves
and their families.
Highlight
of the event was the unveiling of the new MACOSA Information Centre for the
department, a project that was conceived and executed by members of the
2013/2014 leadership of Mass Communication Students Association (MACOSA).
Unveiling
the project, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Hassan Isah praised
the initiative for the project and enjoined the incoming leadership to emulate
the vision of the outgoing headship.
The
Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics),
Prof Steve Metiboba, expressed pleasure at the opportunity given him by his
principal to represent and praised the Head of the Department, Reverend Sister Chika
Asogwa, for the manner she has molded her students.
He
enjoined the students to take adequate care of the project, and called on other
departmental presidents to emulate the visionary leadership of Comrade Shedrach
Awodi the outgoing MACOSA President.
Comrade
Awodi who said the project was borne out of the need for a suitable platform
for information dissemination for Mass Communication Department, called on the
incoming leadership of the body to maintain the project.
He
thanked the students of the department for the cooperation he has enjoyed since
he assumed office.
