Civil society groups call for rejection of 60% SALARY KOGI STATE Civil servants
ORGNAISED civil society groups in Kogi State have called on workers in the state to reject the recent slash in their salaries by the state government.
In a press release signed by the Executive Director, Initiative for Grassroots Advancement (INGRA), Hamza Aliyu and the Executive Director, Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR), Idris Miliki, they described government action as unacceptable and called on workers to reject the action.
Here is the full wording of the Press Release Made available to yabagionline.blogspot.com:
It could be recalled that during the week the government of Kogi State under the leadership of Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada announced the commencement of 60% salary to workers of grade level 7 and above in the state, with reasons that there had been reduction in the statutory allocation from the federation account.
We feel this as unacceptable, condemnable and uncalled for. This is a government who also has not been paying full salaries to local government workers despite the fact that as today there are no democratically elected local government councils as provided by the constitution, thus the question is were are the salaries of the local government chairman and their councillors? The government has also stopped paying WAEC fees for Kogi students without justification. For a government who has failed to pay exam fees for its students, be able to offer scholarships and meaningful employment to its citizens? Has the Governor reduced his own salaries and allowances by the same percentage (60%)? Has the Governor reduced the wastages and corruption associated with his government? What does a government live for when it can not provide for the welfare and security of its citizens as provided by the Constitution? What is the Governor doing with the numerous political appointees who have no functions and schedules but collect salaries and allowances at the end of every month? Why is this non performing government not carrying the Workers and the people of the state along before taking such illegal and unilateral decision.
We call on the Workers to out rightly reject this latest antic of Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada administration and fight it with all legitimate and legal means, as they have nothing to lose than to break the chain of oppression as being perpetuated by the current administration in Kogi state. This is a government that has misplaced its priorities by embarking on frivolous unsustainable projects that has no immediate benefit to the people of the state
We make bold to say that this government has failed in all ramification and should be rejected.
Signed: Hamza Aliyu
Executive Director INGRA
