Kogi workers poised for industrial action

THE cold war brewing between the government of Kogi State and the leadership of organised labour seems to be heading for its zenith with Industrial action seemingly in the offing.
This development was made public by an inside source close to both the Kogi State Chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the government of the state.
The source informed our blog that despite recent meeting between government and workers’ leadership which culminated in the submission of a Situation Report on April 2015 Salaries, the workers, under the leadership of Comrade Onuh Edoka, are preparing for a strike action as the last resort.
In the Situation Report on April 2015 Salaries, a copy of which was made available to this blog, Labour stated that its position during the last meeting with government was that it would not take anything less than 100% as payment for April salary.
The workers also told government categorically that any attempt to pay them 60% salary for April, 2015 would be deemed as a bonus to workers.
The document also showed that the governor, Captain Idris Wada, at the meeting, told Labour leadership that since workers insisted on 100% payment, he would source for funds to be able to make the payment.
The directive by labour leaders that workers should continue to exercise calm and abide by the laws, the source said, is just a veil, that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the NLC are putting finishing touches on the impending strike.
Plateau state faced the same situation few weeks ago before it culminated in a strike action that was declared yesterday, Tuesday, 5th April, 2015.
